EMBO workshops on research integrity

One of the major goals of EMBO is to help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. This includes an environment where scientists can work honouring the highest scientific and ethical standards.

As part of EMBO?s efforts in fostering appropriate research practices, the Science Policy Programme organises interactive one-day workshops on research integrity in scientific institutes in the different EMBC member states and with the support of a local EMBO Member.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Objectives of the workshops

  • Raise awareness about the importance of conducting research in a responsible way.
  • Contribute to fostering responsible research practices in Europe.
  • Engage the EMBO community.

At the end of the workshop the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the key responsibilities of researchers.
  • Recognize deviations from norms, rules and regulations.
  • Contribute to discussions about research integrity.

Workshop features

  • One-day long.
  • Targeted at senior post-docs and young group leaders. These individuals will either soon start or have just started their own research group as independent investigators, so will be directly responsible for the research carried out in their labs. Attending the course would not only benefit them as individuals, but also the members of their research groups.
  • Maximum 25-30 participants. To reach a larger audience, an introductory talk about research integrity open to all interested is typically given at the beginning of the day.
  • Interactive: the programme includes questions, scenarios and discussions.

Other benefits

  • The participants receive free access to an on-line training course on research integrity (Epigeum course).
  • The participants receive relevant material in advance of the workshop.
  • The day after the workshop, the EMBO staff meets senior members of the host institute (heads of units, of departments, etc.) to discuss issues arisen during the workshop and in general issues related to research integrity.

Workshop topics

The following topics can be adapted to specific research environments:

  • Researcher's responsibilities
  • Research misconduct
  • Publication issues
  • Emerging policy issues in data management
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Supervisor's responsibilities
  • Research involving human subjects (included only if relevant to the institute)
  • Research involving animals (included only if relevant to the institute)
